From rescue to recovery: a year of transforming lives

From rescue to recovery: a year of transforming lives

Thanks to our generous community of supporters and volunteers, together, we have transformed thousands of animals’ lives this year; animals in desperate need of veterinary care, often with no one else to turn to.  Access to veterinary care is not just essential for saving lives; it’s the foundation of a brighter, healthier future for animals and people everywhere. At WVS, it is our mission to ensure animals of all species, anywhere in the world, can access vital veterinary care – and can continue to access this care for years to come.

During 2024, life-changing treatment was given to over 103,000 animals, over 1.2 million animals were vaccinated, and we sent over 1,000 vital veterinary aid packages to 230 animal charities around the globe.

On the frontline of animal welfare: 103,962 animals treated

At the core of WVS is providing much-needed veterinary services to animals who are most in need, in places all around the world. In many of the communities that we work in, this may be the only chance an animal has of receiving treatment for life-threatening injuries or illnesses. Through our clinics and outreach programmes, our skilled veterinary teams offer a lifeline for these animals in desperate need of medical intervention. We treat any animal, from wildlife rescued from poachers to abandoned dogs who have been subjected to cruelty, we go wherever an animal needs our help. With dedicated veterinary teams deployed worldwide, our patients receive comprehensive care, from rescue to recovery and rehoming – we are there every step of the way to make sure they have the best possible chance of a healthier and happier future.

Biggie was one of the patients treated at our clinic in Tamil Nadu, India, during the year. From suffering from a gigantic tumour, to being given a new lease of life, the care he received was life changing. He now lives happily at the centre, getting lots of love and fuss just as he deserves. Read more about his story here.

A sustainable solution: 2,863 vets trained

In many countries, access to Continued Professional Development (CPD) opportunities is limited, making life-long-learning difficult for veterinary professionals. We now have five International Training Centres (ITCs) located in Malawi, India (one in Goa and one in Tamil Nadu), Thailand, the Galapagos Islands, and a new centre is opening soon in Cambodia. Through these centres, thousands of vets are provided with practical training to improve surgical skills and learn best practice in animal welfare. There are also great training opportunities for veterinary nurses and assistants. Our Veterinary Taskforce and All-Terrain Clinic (our fully equipped, mobile veterinary hospital) focus on delivering these training programmes to hard-to-reach locations, and places with limited access to care. Alongside this in-person training, we continue to grow the WVS Academy, offering a wide range of free online resources to support vets globally.

United for animals worldwide: Over 1,000 aid parcels sent

As well as directly treating over 103,000 animals in 2024, we also enabled the treatment of thousands more through our veterinary aid shipments. We take donations of unused, in-date medication and send them to charities and organisations caring for animals. We also often supply much-needed equipment, which in 2024, included an ultrasound machine sent to support wildlife in the Amazon rainforest, cages to assist with animal birth control programmes in Greece, and an anesthetic machine to help treat animals in Cameroon. In 2024, we sent over £768,000 worth of supplies to 65 countries – over double the value of the previous year. Basic preventative medications such as anti-parasite treatments, can make such a big impact to the health and welfare of animal populations.

Cages were sent to Kalymnos Cat Project in Greece to help them provide care to more feline friends.

“Thanks to WVS we have received an important donation of medicines in order to be able to take care of the horses that are hospitalised, due to the terrible mistreatment they receive on the streets. Thank you to WVS for ensuring health care for so many patients and for helping us continue to grow.” - Caballos De Quilmes, Argentina

Preventing deadly diseases: More than 1.2 million animals vaccinated

Working with dedicated partners, we vaccinate animals every day of the year to ensure they are safe from horrific diseases like distemper, parvovirus, and rabies. Our flagship project, Mission Rabies, is working to protect not only dogs from rabies but whole communities, as this is a disease that causes approximately 59,000 human deaths every year. We are vaccinating dogs on a huge scale to stop the disease at the source and protect people and animals from this deadly threat. Every vaccine administered is logged in the WVS Data Collection App to allow us to deliver campaigns as efficiently and effectively as possible and provide valuable data insights. Learn more about our Mission Rabies project here.

Knowledge is power: 3.5 million people educated

Across the world, we deliver key rabies prevention and animal welfare messages within schools and communities. 2024 has been a year of remarkable growth for our global education programme, reaching over 2.4 million children, 60,000 teachers, and 1 million community members. In India, our education programme expanded from 5 states and 10 districts in 2023 to 9 states and 24 districts, doubling the number of schools and tripling the number of children reached. Similarly, in Malawi, coverage grew from 6 districts in 2023 to 11 in 2024, reaching over 1.3 million children and 260,000 community members. With plans for further expansion across India, Malawi, Cambodia, and Thailand in 2025, the year ahead promises even greater impact.

Future focus: Exciting updates on the way

WVS Cambodia

In 2024, we were thrilled to announce the launch of WVS Cambodia, with the existing Animal Rescue Cambodia (ARC) clinic continuing to deliver expert veterinary care now as part of the WVS family. We also announced the exciting plans of a new WVS International Training Centre (ITC) at the Royal University of Agriculture (RUA) campus (Phnom Penh), which will offer world-class training for both local and international veterinary professionals. This new facility is currently under construction, and we cannot wait to share news and updates during the year ahead.

Expanding work with equines and large animals

In 2024, we provided expert treatment to over 14,000 equines and large animals worldwide. Along with delivering life-saving veterinary care, our teams trained local veterinary professionals and offered crucial support and guidance to owners, helping to raise the standard of care. Building on this success, we are significantly expanding our programmes in 2025, with a strong focus on reaching more animals in South America and Africa. These efforts will ensure that even more animals and their communities benefit from improved care and resources.

New Thailand ITC opening

Our International Training Centre (ITC) in Thailand, originally established in a house on the outskirts of Chiang Mai, has been a cornerstone of animal welfare for many years. It has provided treatment, rehabilitation, and rehoming for thousands of animals, while also hosting regular training courses for veterinary professionals. To expand our capacity to deliver life-saving care and grow our training programmes, WVS Thailand has embarked on an ambitious construction project. This year we will be delighted to open our new, purpose-built centre, enabling us to care for more animals than ever before and continue transforming lives. Learn more about this new centre from our CEO and Founder, Dr Luke Gamble.
