Because every animal matters
In 2003, Worldwide Veterinary Service (WVS) began a mission to improve animal welfare. It all started in a vet practice in a small village in Dorset in the UK, where Luke Gamble, our CEO and founder, started sending aid parcels abroad to charities in desperate need of support. In Luke's travels as a vet, he saw that all over the world millions of animals were lacking access to even the most basic level of veterinary care. He set up WVS was created to change this.
At the heart of our mission is collaboration - ensuring charities around the world have the critical medical supplies and equipment they need to care for animals. This grew into deploying volunteer vets and veterinary professionals abroad to communities in desperate need of veterinary care. Our teams noticed the lack of access to quality training for veterinary professionals around the world and this developed into establishing high quality veterinary training courses to address the route course of animals' lack of access to accessible and high-quality veterinary care. By providing accessible training, we can promote long-lasting improvements in animal welfare.
Our first International Training Centre (ITC) opened in Ooty, India - we now have five ITCs across the globe providing free care to sick and injured animals, conducting outreach programmes to communities in need, and training local and international veterinary professionals and students. We offer learning opportunities to empower the global veterinary community and raise the standard of care sustainably. This ensures that whenever and wherever an animal is in need, a professional vet can provide crucial care. This has been further enhanced by the launch of the WVS Academy in 2021; this online platform allows veterinary professional to access to high quality resources to guide best clinical practice in resource limited settings, and to foster an environment of shared knowledge.
A crucial part of our mission is to bring expert care to where it's most needed. At WVS we have always been ready to step into action to help animals and communities in regions with limited access to veterinary care - this was why the WVS Veterinary Taskforce was established in 2018. Our team works to elevate the standard of care by providing veterinary services to communities in need, conducting surgical training courses, and championing the One Health approach.
When disaster strikes, we are there to help animals and their communities - whether we are deploying teams on the ground or sending much-needed veterinary supplies. From our first emergency response in the Internally Displaced Persons camps in Kenya in 2008, to supporting animal NGOs in Grenada when Hurricane Beryl hit in 2024 - there is no where we won't go for animals.
“For me, WVS represents hope, transformation, and the underlying belief that change is always possible when driven by passion and purpose.” Luke Gamble, CEO and founder of WVS.
Thanks to our donors and supporters, we are fighting the injustice of animal suffering and transforming the world for animals. We will not stop until every animal receives the care they deserve.
Luke qualified as a vet in 1999 from Bristol University. Having completed a clinical scholarship in large animal medicine and surgery at Cambridge University, Luke's focused objective is to help as many animals as possible in his career.
