A safer tomorrow for Thailand's temple dogs

A safer tomorrow for Thailand's temple dogs

A place to call home

Across Thailand, temples provide sanctuaries for stray dogs. They are a place of safety, with no threat of violence, space to roam, and access to food and water. Monks care for the dogs, giving them a place to feel safe and protected from the world outside. Sadly, the monks cannot protect the dogs from deadly diseases like rabies, injuries from other dogs or cars, or parasites like ticks and fleas.

That is where we come in.

In 2024 our teams treated over 1,300 animals at 70 temples across Thailand.

DONATE

Our team at WVS Thailand carries out outreach visits to temples, providing essential care to the dogs that call the temples home. This includes:

  • Vaccinations

  • Flea, tick and worm treatment

  • Treatment for injuries

  • Arranging spay and neuter surgeries

  • We also work closely with monks, offering advice and guidance on keeping the dogs healthy and preventing disease outbreaks

A happier future for Biscuit

When our teams visited the temple Biscuit calls home, they noticed he was in pain whilst walking and discovered he had been hit by a car about a week before. Our team took him to the centre for treatment, and found his fracture had healed unevenly. A blood test revealed he also had blood parasites which if left untreated can be very serious, and in some cases even fatal.

Thankfully, he is now receiving the treatment he needs for a happy and healthy life.

More and more dogs need help

As living costs increase more dogs are being abandoned on the streets, temples are becoming more and more overcrowded, and more help is urgently needed.

In January of this year, our team visited Wat Wiwek Wanaram, a temple that shelters over 100 stray dogs. We spoke with Monk Phra Laeng, who has been caring for these dogs for nearly 20 years. Initially, the temple housed around 10 dogs, but as people struggle with increasing costs, more abandoned dogs have been brought to the temple, and donations to support their care have decreased.
