Animal Hospital - Caribbean

Qualified experienced vets are required to volunteer at this busy animal hospital on the beautiful island of Carriacou. (Two weeks minimum). Veterinary nurses also welcome.

Carriacou Animal Hospital is run as an independent non-profit organization and provides the only qualified veterinary care on the island of Carriacou.

The hospital is located on the Airport Road just outside the main village of Hillsborough. This area is also known as Lauriston Beach. The Animal hospital is a low cost out-patient treatment centre offering preventative health care including: vaccinations, worming and treatments for mange, fleas, ticks, wounds, infections, ear mites and other diseases.

They also offer affordable spay and neuter surgeries. CAH is staffed by volunteer vets/vet nurses, and a full time veterinary nurse.

Their popular Volunteer Vet Program attracts vets from all over the world who return time and time again to experience the friendly welcome and appreciation they receive from the people whose animals they have helped in Carriacou.

Expected working hours will vary, but there will be plenty of free time to explore the island and its many facets. Volunteers are required to commit to two weeks minimum with the maximum length of time being flexible.

The country this project is based in is listed as a high risk of Zika virus on the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) website. Please follow the advice on their website when considering participating in this project.

A trip to the Carriacou Animal Hospital is so rewarding and each day is different, as the charity cares for the majority of the island's cats and dogs. The CAH team not only work on a daily basis at the clinic but also carry out home visits and this is an ideal way of seeing this beautiful island. We also highly recommend you start the day with a swim in the warm Caribbean sea!

Accommodation is at the Carriacou Animal Hospital facility. Volunteers will be accommodated in a beachside bungalow located on the same site as the hospital. The completely furnished accommodation includes kitchen, living room, two bedrooms and one bathroom. Extra mattresses can be put on the floor to accommodate larger groups. A short walk across the road is the beautify blue Caribbean sea and a swim before work in the morning is highly recommended.

Meals are NOT provided; accommodation is on a self-catering basis. There are restaurants on either side of the hospital and the main town of Hillsborough, with shops & all other amenities, is only ½ a mile away

Durring your time off a trip to the Grenadines is well recommended and they are as described in the guide books emeralds in a sapphire sea.

We are seeking qualified experienced vets and vet nurses.

You will need to allow plenty of time before travelling for your immunisations to be effective. DO NOT LEAVE THIS UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE. As you will be working with animals the Rabies and Tetanus vaccines are essential. We have provided links below to websites with useful information on immunisations and travel advice which we highly recommend that you visit.
