Colin McDermott and Matt Backhouse have recently completed an epic 900km cycle ride from Bangkok to Chiang Mai in aid of WVS.
Colin who is from Troon in Scotland volunteered at our dog shelter in 2016 after his wife Inga (a vet) had volunteered there. Colin vowed to return and volunteer at the dog shelter once more but wanted to incorporate this into a fundraising adventure to raise money and awareness for WVS and in particular, our dog shelter.
Colin decided to undertake a cycling challenge and ride from Bangkok to Chiang Mai where the centre is based. He was joined on his journey by Matt Backhouse who had seen a post on our Facebook page and decided he wanted a 'piece of the action'. Matt who is originally from Leeds, but has been living in Chiang Mai for the last 7 years with his wife Lindsay where they work helping provide animal welfare. Matt specialises in stray dog sterilisations and has spent time in India working for an NGO.
Matt and Colin received some sponsorship from their local businesses and flew to Thailand to start their challenge, they started their journey on January 20nd and cycled through
Ayutthaya, Nakhon Sawan, Sukhothai and Ban Tuek before reaching their final destination of Hang Dong in Chiang Mai today. They were supported by Ian Clarke, who is our dog behaviourist at 'New Hope' at the shelter and Khun Tree who also works for WVS in Thailand.
After 900 km, various cramps and many laughs, Colin and Matt arrived at the shelter to a very special welcome! There is no rest for Colin though as he will be immediatley starting a 3-week volunteering stint at the shelter where he will be walking the dogs, amongst other tasks.
Colin said, “It's been absolutely epic! It has been such an amazing journey and now I am so grateful to be spending a few weeks volunteering at the WVS dog shelter and assisting with all the great work being done here.”
Emma Harrison, Marketing Manager from WVS said “We couldn’t be more proud of Colin and Matt’s achievements, to undertake any fundraising challenge in order to raise money for WVS is amazing but Colin and Matt took this to another level by cycling 900km from Bangkok to Chiang Mai. Their commitment, determination and enthusiasm to achieve and fundraise their fundraising goal is fantastic and we are so thankful and grateful for the money and awareness raised.”
So far, Colin and Matt have raised over £2500 which is absolutely amazing - all proceeds will go directly to helping the dogs at the shelter.
