Vet Takes on the 2019 Virgin Money London Marathon for WVS

Mon 10th Sep 2018

Caroline Thursfield is a vet from Australia and the recipient of our charity ballot place in the 2019 Virgin Money London Marathon! We caught up with her to find out why she wanted to take on this mega challenge and support WVS!

As a previous volunteer with WVS in Maun, Botswana, I have observed first-hand the important work WVS undertakes in delivering veterinary services to remote communities. The work that is performed in these remote, and often poor, communities is so important; promoting animal welfare and providing basic health services plays a vital role in educating these communities.

When I saw the opportunity to apply for a place in the London Marathon as a WVS charity ambassador, I was excited by the prospect of being able to combine my passion for running with animal health and welfare advocacy. It is a very special opportunity and I aim to raise awareness of the important work WVS performs on a daily basis.

In my role as a veterinarian, I work closely with numerous animal welfare groups and also spent a significant portion of my long service leave volunteering as a veterinarian in remote African communities, working with a broad range of animals ranging from small kittens to hippos and rhinos. I’m so excited to participate in such an event as iconic as the London Marathon, something I never thought I would have an opportunity to do. I can’t wait to get started with my fundraising, asking for support from clients at my veterinary clinic and through a ‘VetBlog’ I am starting to show my training and fundraising progress!

I also anticipate significant support from my well-established running group, The Crosbie Crew, of which there are over 400 active members. I took up running four years ago and joined this Melbourne-based group in 2015. Since then I have completed 15 half-marathons and ran my first marathon in the beautiful (but hilly!) Queenstown, New Zealand in 2016.

I am also in training for a marathon coming up this November that courses through four wineries in the Victorian countryside which should be yet another beautiful but challenging run. After that it will be on to training for the big one – the Virgin Money London Marathon! My training buddy, Angus the Border Collie, will help keep me on track and I can’t wait to take part and raise lots of money for WVS!

If you'd like to spur Caroline on in this incredible challenge and support our work in the process, please consider a donation to her fundraising page! THANK YOU!!
