Statement on recent incident at the Caucasus Wildlife Refuge in Armenia

Thu 19th May 2016

WVS has been made aware of an incident that has taken place at the Caucasus Wildlife Refuge, a privately protected area managed by the FPWC. This is where the rescued lions from Gyumri Zoo were taken and where they are currently being provided with the care and help they need.

Unfortunately, on the night of the 10th March, an intoxicated man, entered this area illegally and climbed over both security barriers (to go to where the lions are based) and put his hand through to stroke a lion and his hand was subsequently injured. The man concerned was rescued by the keeper and rangers looking after the lions - he is in hospital, his hand has been saved. The lions were not harmed at all during this incident.

We will provide a further update on the lions when we are able to do so. Thank you for all of your support so far.
