Surgical Training Courses For Vet Students & Vet Graduates - India 2018

The WVS International Training Centre in Ooty, India is running Animal Birth Control (ABC courses for newly graduated vets, veterinary students in their final two years training as well as qualified and experienced vet nurses. This course will provide you with essential hands-on surgical experience

Launched in September 2010, our International Training Centre in Southern India, primarily provides veterinary training courses for animal welfare charities and veterinary workers living in India.

However, every year, the ITC (International Training Centre) in India, runs surgical training courses to recent vet graduates and veterinary students (whom are in their final 2 years of training) to attend a specially designed course to suit international participants. This course is also open to qualified veterinary nurses who are looking to develop their practical skills.

Course participants will learn about the importance of surgical dog population control in India and gain practical skills in performing spay and neuter surgeries. The ABC-surgery (Animal Birth Control) course includes practical surgery sessions in the operating theatre as well as theoretical lessons in the classroom.

The focus of the course is best practice techniques that are relevant for the high volume ABC-clinics and programs in developing countries, where huge stray dog population is a problem. The ITC ABC-surgery course is a great opportunity to those wishing to gain more confidence in routine soft tissue surgery, as well as for those who plan to work in ABC-programs or in other animal health, welfare & development programs in developing countries in the future.

Full supervision from experienced vets will ensure that students have the backup and support needed to make the most of this unique learning experience.

Participants should take practical and comfortable clothes to work in e.g. (scrubs). If you would like to purchase a WVS scrub top, please contact the WVS UK office. We also recommend that you take wet weather gear as well as ensuring that you have warm clothing for the evenings. Towels, surgical kit and instruments are all provided at the ITC.

For Participants who reside in The republic of India or Nepal  please make your booking by contacting Ilona Otter on

The country this project is based in is listed as a high risk of Zika virus on the Centre for Disease Control (CDC)  website. Please follow the advice on their website when considering participating in this project.
